Sunder Nursery was originally called Azim Bagh, a Heritage Mughal Garden spread across 90 acres setup in the 16th century, on the original Grand Trunk Road. This area has 15 monuments, 6 of which have been declared UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
Around the 1920’s, when Lutyens’ Delhi was being laid out, plants and trees from the world over were brought and planted in the Timber section, to test which were best suited for the Lutyens’ avenues. So there are many stand-alone, exotic species, quite unknown to us that flourish here. Beyond the Timber section, there is a beautiful mix of native and exotic trees.
The CPWD, SDMC, ASI and AKTC have recently given the Gardens a tremendous revamp.
The Sausage Tree Nature Walks are named after the only exotic tree species planted as an avenue tree, in Lutyens’ Delhi. The walks were launched on 5th June 2013, World Environment Day. The intent of the walks is to introduce the participant to select trees by their common names whilst sharing some interesting facts about them thereby creating awareness and a meaningful association.
Kavita is a senior walk leader having completed 90 walks in the last decade. She has conducted walks across NCR and in different cities, as well. Participants have found her walks informative, interactive and interesting.
